Wondering what kind of treats to get for your giant breed dog?  You want something that lasts, but you also want something safe and healthy.  I talked to dozens of Great Pyrenees owners, both livestock guardian owners and pet owners, and asked them what they use for their dogs.

So what treats, bones, and chews should you feed your Great Pyrenees or other livestock guardian dog (LGD) breed for health and happiness?  Great Pyrenees and other LGDs love several different kinds of treats, including raw food treats, bits of cooked meat, and pig ears.  Favorite bones and chews include bully sticks, deer antlers, and Himalayan yak chews, among others.  LGD breeds prefer healthy, natural, animal-based treats and chews in general.

I’ve compiled a list of the most common responses Great Pyrenees owners give for healthy, safe, and delicious treats and chews.  Let me know in the comments section what your dogs prefer!

Large Breed Health and Obesity Problems – Limiting Treats

Just a quick word here and then I’ll jump into the list.  Please remember that you need to be very careful how many treats and chews you’re feeding your dogs.  LGD breeds were bred on marginal diets, and many of these dogs who are now living in the modern world are obese.  Obesity in LGDs causes shorter lifespans and a number of painful and even debilitating health problems.

Just remember to keep a close eye on how many treats you’re feeding your dogs.  If you’re using tricks for dog training, use very tiny pieces of treats so you know your dogs aren’t getting too much.  Enjoy the list!

Top 4 Safe and Healthy Treats for Great Pyrenees and Other LGD Breeds

#1 - Boiled or grilled plain chicken

Not only delicious, this is a super healthy and affordable treat to give your dogs.  This is what I use during training.  I tear off tiny pieces of chicken for training sessions, never having to worry my dogs are getting too many calories!

#2 - Raw meat treats

These are amazing and your dog will absolutely love them!  I recommend Trudog’s freeze dried raw treats.  These are all natural freeze dried real meats that are treat size for your dog.

I love their ingredient lists – for example, here are the ingredients for their Savory Salmon Treats: Wild Alaskan Salmon.  That’s the whole list!  It doesn’t get much healthier than that.  Here are a few of my favorite treats:

#3 - Primalvore Bone Broth for Dogs

I’m sure you’ve heard about all the amazing benefits of bone broth for people, but did you know it’s great for dogs too?  Primalvore Bone Broth (see it here) is made with very high quality ingredients and is super healthy for your LGD breed dogs.  This treat is great for your dogs’ health in so many different ways – gut health, bone health, nail and coat health, and overall energy.

#4 - Kibble!

So many Great Pyr owners told me they give their dogs treats of kibble when training.  You can even feed your dogs’ entire meals to them through training sessions with kibble.  Affordable and convenient, kibble makes great treats.  For more on what kind of kibble to feed your Great Pyr or LGD breed dog, check out my article, Livestock Guardian Dogs and Food: What to Feed, When, and Problems to Avoid.

Top 6 Safe and Healthy Bones and Chews for Great Pyrenees and Other LGD Breeds

Generally speaking, Great Pyr owners recommend all natural meat bones and chews for LGD breed dogs.  Don’t forget you’ll want to supervise your dogs with bones so that when they get too small, you can throw them away.  Unfortunately, pretty much all bones can be choking hazards when small.

Here are the top five most recommended bones and chews.

  1. Pig Ears - See them at Amazon and Chewy.

  2. Deer Antlers – One Great Pyr owner told me to buy the big ones so they are much less of a choking hazard.  See them at Amazon and Chewy.

  3. Cow Hooves – Several Great Pyrenees owners said that for an additional (rare) treat, fill them with peanut butter! See them at Amazon and Chewy.

  4. Bully sticks – You can never go wrong with these.  Out of all the bones recommended by Great Pyr mamas, these are the ones I heard recommended the most.  See them at Amazon and Chewy.  I buy giant (couple feet long) bully sticks for my dogs from my local D&B.  I’ve not been able to find them online.

  5. Buffalo horn - See them at Amazon and Chewy.

  6. Himalayan Yak Chew – I’ve never given these to my dogs, but these things look amazing, and they were highly recommended by multiple Great Pyrenees owners!  I’ve ordered some and can’t wait to see how my dogs like them. The yak chews are made by local craftsmen in the Himalayan Mountains.  They are made from yak milk, cow milk, lime juice, and a pinch of salt.  That actually sounds so good I kind of want to try one. Come on, you know you’re with me! See them at Amazon and Chewy.
